Bike sales surge again
New statistics from the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) have confirmed that bike sales and registrations continued to grow dramatically in October.
Joining a string of positive results in September, August, July and June, as the BMF has previously reported, powered two-wheeler (PTW) registrations of all kinds climbed year-on-year by 24.3% in October to 8,856 units. Motorcycles were up by 21.2% year-on-year to 5,990 units, while scooters were up 31.3% year-on-year to 2,866.
The MCIA found spectacular growth in the electric segment of the market in particular, with sales up by 50.2% year-on-year and a remarkable 71.8% on the month. A statement by the MCIA noted that: “Riders love the fact that most electric PTWs can be charged from a conventional three-pin plug and many feature removable batteries, meaning the vehicle doesn’t have to be near the charger and expensive infrastructure is not required.”
The continuing growth in the scooter market suggests that the ongoing trend in commuters switching to PTWs is continuing to have an effect. While the new lockdown may lead to disruption in the market in November as dealers are once again obliged to close their doors – although the MCIA has also called on the government to recognise motorcycle dealerships as essential business during the lockdown – the growth in sales over the previous months has created a great deal of momentum in the market.
