Acoustic camera trial spotted
An acoustic camera trial has been spotted on the A32 in Hampshire.
Only one acoustic camera has been spotted thus far near Loomies, and road users living or travelling near it have already shared photographs and warnings via social media.
It is understood that the trial is being conducted under the auspices of the local council rather than the police, and that it is part of a trial programme not currently connected to enforcement activity.
As the BMF has previously reported, the Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed this summer that trials would be taking place in 2019 and early 2020. While excessive vehicle noise has long been illegal, proposals to introduce acoustic cameras for enforcement have proven controversial and achieving precise readings of sufficient accuracy for the courts in real-world conditions is a complicated technical problem.
