Bike sales saw impressive gains last month, defying political and economic headwinds to post year-on-year growth in every capacity class.

New figures released by the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA), a long-standing BMF Corporate Member, showed 16,682 registrations of new powered two-wheelers of all kinds in March – a 9.7% increase on last year’s 14,734 registrations.

Motorcycles in all capacities saw a 10.1% year-on-year increase, reaching 13,659 registrations, while the 51-125cc band saw 13% growth. Mopeds were a remarkable success story, seeing a 42% increase in registrations compared to the same period last year.

Honda was once again the most popular marque for new registrations, with BMF Motorrad and Yamaha in second and third. The single most popular motorcycle of the month was the BMW R1250 GS, with 582 registrations.

This news comes after a 141% surge in bike ownership in London alone ahead of the introduction of Ultra Low Emissions Zones (ULEZ) – as the BMF has previously reported.

Commenting, Head of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) Stephen Latham said: "Overall, dealers are cautiously optimistic that 2019 will be a more positive year for motorcycle sales. We look forward to seeing what the next quarter brings."
