Government zero emission strategy unveiled

The Department for Transport has released the government’s ‘Road to Zero’ strategy outlining the intention to “lead the world” in zero emission vehicle technology.

The strategy document makes the bold promise that the ‘Road to Zero’ strategy “sets the stage for the biggest technology advancement to hit UK roads since the invention of the combustion engine”.

The proposals include a vast expansion of the country’s green infrastructure to “put the UK at the forefront of a global revolution in motoring and help to deliver cleaner air, a better environment and a strong clean economy”. On a practical note, the government’s launch announcement also observed that the strategy was intended to help “put the UK at the forefront of an industry that is estimated to be worth up to £7.6 trillion per year by 2050.”

Although the proposals inevitably focus primarily on cars, vans and lorries, with the stated ambition of “at least half of new cars to be ultra low emission by 2030”, significant attention is still paid to motorcycles and the strategy notes that “Zero emission motorcycles can help reduce congestion, improve urban air quality and reduce noise.”

Commenting, the BMF’s Director of Political and Technical Services Anna Zee said: “After a quick glance through this document, I am pleased to say that motorcycles seem to be properly integrated into this strategy – though it is somewhat disconcerting to find bikes lumped in with buses in some of the statistical pie charts. Anyone considering buying an electric bike should note that the current grants are only guaranteed until October 2018. It looks as if they could be reduced after that and whether or not any grant is available after 2020 is a decision yet to be made.”
