Christmas is one of the busiest times on the road. With so many motorists out visiting friends and family, plus vans and lorries delivering last-minute presents, the road network sees some of the most traffic of the whole year.

Highways England is feeling the Christmas spirit by helping make everyone’s journeys easier. From 06:00 on December 22 to 00:01 on January 2 almost 400 miles of roadworks will be removed. This means almost 99% of motorways will be clear of roadworks, with more lanes open and some speed restrictions removed.

Melanie Clarke, Highways England’s Customer Service Director, said:

“We’re doing everything we can to make journeys as smooth as possible this Christmas and that’s why we’re keeping 99% of the road network we manage free from roadworks.”
