High visibility jackets are obvious safety choices to avoid the “SMIDSY” issue. However, almost 500 supporters of an online petition think that some riders are taking this too far with ‘polite notice’ clothing being easy to mistake for the police.

They might attract people’s gaze, but no detailed statistical study is required to emphasise how easy it could be to mistake “polite” for “police”. At a brief glance across a T-junction, that subtle difference is easy to miss.

On the petition’s website page, its creator Ed Elliott said: “It is destroying the cool biker look...It's not big and it's not clever...I think everyone is a police officer.”

Safety is paramount in motorcycling, but perhaps it’s best to save the police costume for an interesting night at home and not take it on the road?

The petition is just 16 supporters short of 500 and can be found online at change.org.
