Wells Classic Motorcycle Club are staging their 5th Annual “Tortoise and Hare Run” on 7-6-2015.

Chris who organises the event with his wife Joan, along the help of Peter Crosthwaite, with many club member’s and friends helping on the day, says this run has become on of the West Country’s popular events according to the very good feedback that we have again received from last years entrants. The event attracted over 150 entrants plus marshals.

Again we have included a “Snail Route” for Veterans and Very low powered machines, this enables us to make the “Tortoise Run” a bit more demanding by taking in some of the local hills. The event again starts at Wells Football Club with signing on, and hot drinks between 8am and 9.00
Bikes then assemble in their run groups at the picturesque Market Place which is a sight to be savoured before get flagged of in small groups by The Mayor at 10 am. The routes take you through some of our outstanding countryside to a coffee stop at Castle Cary RFC where as Chris explains you can redeem one of four of your inclusive tea, coffee and cake vouchers.

On returning to Wells Football Club for lunch, there is a second run in the afternoon, returning for tea and cake, along with the presentations which includes Class and “Best Attended Club” Awards etc.

We also have a great raffle with some really good prizes. Wookey Hole Attractions and Hotel- the famous Caves and Hotel owned by Gerry Cottle the circus guy-gives us a great prize; a stay in the hotel and free entrance to the caves complex. We hope lots of people stay and get involved in the raffle as all the money we raise goes to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Last year we gave them a £2000.00 donation from the event.

Chris says “We make sure you get a lot for your money”. The entry fee £9 per solo rider and £12.00 with pillion for those that pre-enter. You can pre-order food on the entry forms. There is also an amount of onsite  camping for Saturday and Sunday night by application in advance.  There is also local accommodation and campsites where you can stay for longer, to take in more of the outstanding area. It’s our aim to give the entrants an enjoyable day out, full value for money, and raise some much needed funds for Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance.

Now some may be asking what the various groups of the run are.  As Chris explains the idea is that all types and ages of Bikes and Scooters can take part as the event is open to all bikes.

The Tortoise Run - which is approximately 70 miles - is for old and low powered machines of unlimited capacity up to year 1950 and small capacity machines including scooters up to 250cc and up to 1985. Plus a limited number of low capacity modern machines”

“Alternative Snail Route”.  For veterans and very low powered machines.  Approximately 43 miles for the day on fairly level countryside, starting and meeting with the other groups for coffee, lunch etc. This group allows us to make the “Tortoise Run” a little more demanding.

“The Hare Run” is approximately 115 miles. It’s for machines over 250cc. up to year 2000. Plus a limited number of Modern Machines” The Tortoise and Hare Routes are signposted along with some marshals.

The Snail Route is dependant on a Route Sheet, some signs plus a “Route Leader”. So no reason for anyone to get lost. We are also looking for some marshals, so why not sign up.
