During 2016’s AGM, which took place in October, Mitch Elliott took on the new role of BMF Events Director. Mitch has a lot of plans, starting with increasing the exposure of events and introducing new ones across the country. Working with his co-organiser, Tony Nightingale, he has some grand ideas for next year...

Roaring to action

mitch elliott bmf agm 2016Mitch is keen to shake off the stigma that the BMF is ‘just’ a rights organisation. He is keen to establish events that appeal to everybody, with an emphasis on bringing the motorcycling community together.

Primarily, the BMF events are run for members and affiliated clubs, but Mitch is keen to endorse that non-members are welcome too. More importantly, any motorcycle is greeted, no matter its engine size or type – café racers, tourers, mopeds, trikes and more are all welcome.

The events are truly “run by bikers for bikers” and typically feature bands, good food, a bar, camping and fundraising. Families are invited and often the locations are dog-friendly too.

Present predictions

This year, the BMF Scotland Rally will be taking place on September 22-24. Once again, the venue will be the Stair Arms Hotel, Pathhead, which has seen some very successful rallies over the past few years. The hotel has lots of camping space and facilities which visitors can use.

Another date for your diaries is August 11-13, when the BMF Dambusters Rally will kick off again at Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre, Coningsby. Keep checking the Dambuster Rally Facebook page for the latest updates.

But it’s not just 2017, Mitch explained how excited he is for next year. His main focus is adding new events to regions which have seen few BMF events before. Currently, he’s looking toward the South West and the East, but he’s also teased that there might be another Scottish event in the works.

Long-distance touring, FIM style

It’s not just the BMF flagship events you can enjoy in 2017. Along with local club and regional events (you can see a list of these on p66 and at the BMF website), many members are unaware of the fantastic opportunity available to tour abroad with the FIM’s events every year.

Keith Freak, the BMF’s representative within the FIM, explained that there are a number of great events, again “run for bikers by bikers”. The biggest is the FIM Rally – a fully catered event, which sees 1,000 or so riders gather from 20-30 countries. There is also Motocamp – a smaller event that usually attracts only 200-300 riders who love to ride. Both of these are held in different countries every year, mainly within Europe.

If you have never toured abroad, Keith explained that these events are the best way to try it out. It gives you a taste of continental touring in a relaxed environment and the riders who play host will show you the greatest of their country and make sure you feel welcome.

If you are interested in going, the FIM Team GB website has all the entry forms, prices and information about the events for you to download. Entries for the FIM Rally and Motocamp close in late March. For more information or to book tickets, visit
