Most dangerous roads for bikers revealed
A new study has found the 10 most dangerous roads in the United Kingdom for motorcyclists, nine of which are in London.
For the second year running, the A23 in Lambeth was identified as the most dangerous road for bikers and it was joined in the top ten by the A404 in Brent, the A10 and A107 in Hackney, the A501 in Islington, the A13 in Tower Hamlets, the A1 in Islington and the A3 and A3205 in Wandsworth. Only the A483 in Powys, in at number seven, was outside the capital.
London’s disproportionate number of motorcycle accidents was also marked by a troubling trend towards getting worse over time. The 3,639 recorded accidents involving motorcycles in London in 2017, the latest year for which official statistics were available, was up by 8% year-on-year. However, all of the other regions in the study saw decreases in the number of accidents.
The study, which was conducted by Swinton Insurance, also found that most accidents happened on a Friday but that accidents near midday on Sunday were most likely to be fatal. Furthermore, it was found that 83% of accidents were found to have occurred during good weather, 71% occurred on A roads and 92% of crash victims were male. One in three accidents was either of a serious nature or fatal.
