From May 20, vehicles that are more than 40 years old and haven’t received substantial changes will no longer be required to take an MoT. Currently, only vehicles built before 1960 are exempt.

Other changes coming into force will include three defect categories (dangerous, major and minor) and tighter limits on the pollution of diesel vehicles. MoTs will also include a number of new tests, including checking whether tyres are obviously underinflated.
