Scooter manufacturers are teaming up with stolen vehicle recovery experts TRACKER Network UK to help strengthen anti-theft measures in new machines.

Piaggio Group and Vespa retailers and TRACKER Network UK will provide free TRACKER devices with all new Vespa GTS 300, Piaggio Beverly 300 and Beverly 350 scooters purchased from authorised Piaggio and Vespa dealerships between August 1 and October 31 2018.

The first year of the subscription to TRACKER’s monitoring service will also be completely free of charge, and Piaggio Group customers will receive a 10% discount from Lexham Insurance for fitting and activating a TRACKER Monitor as well.

Theft of scooters is a rampant problem, particularly in London, and police are routinely frustrated by stolen bikes being used to commit further crimes or being either sold on or dismantled for parts before they can be recovered. Tracking devices which can demonstrate a stolen bike’s location may improve the chances of a bike being recovered and returned to its rightful owner – and the probability of the thieves being caught, arrested and prosecuted.

Welcoming the news, CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Association Tony Campbell said: “The industry is very much aware of the constant threat of motorcycle and scooter theft, and the crime which is being committed using these products. The industry accepts it has a role to play in combating this crime as it not only affects the market; it causes harm to our riders and the manufacturers’ customers. With the rising costs of insurance and harm caused, the UK motorcycle industry along with the riders and authorities must now work together to reduce and eventually make bike theft a thing of the past.”
